Show someone a soft, slightly dark clip with clean sound and they’ll watch to the end. Pin-sharp 4K off the camera’s built-in mic? Gone in four seconds. This is the single biggest gap between video that cost something and video that did not.
The camera microphone is not a microphone
It is a device for recording the room, the air conditioning, your own footsteps and, somewhere underneath all that, a person talking. It is fine for a reference track. It is not fine for a film.
What proper audio actually involves
- A lapel mic on the person, recorded to its own channel.
- A boom overhead as a second opinion, because lapels rustle.
- A feed off the desk at any event that has a desk.
- Levels watched throughout, not set once and hoped over.
Why it is worth the extra hour
Bad audio cannot be fixed afterwards. Soft footage sharpens up. Dark footage lifts. A wobbly shot can be stabilised. A recording of a fan and a motorway is a recording of a fan and a motorway forever.
If you only spend money on one thing, spend it on sound.
